women’s and young women’s shelter centres (Roks)

Sweden

There are around 180 centres in Sweden working for women’s rights by informing, supporting and having sheltered housings for women escaping domestic violence. The centres have secret addresses and many of the volunteers have to be anonymous for security reasons.

The pressure on the centres are increasing all the time. Presumably because it is becoming less shameful for women today to come forward when they are abused. If this is really the case, or if the violence against women is increasing, nobody knows for sure.

All around Sweden there are thousands of women working in these Women’s and Young Women’s Shelter Centres, and most of them are working voluntarily. This is a  focus on those women who every day work and fight for the rights of the many abused women in Sweden – often without getting a penny for it.
